Best Foot Forwards

When I was a young girl, my mum insisted my sister and I wore Clarks shoes to school. While other girls my age danced, light footed and carefree in their bow decorated ballet pumps, we were forced, kicking and screaming, into thick soled and arch supporting clunky monstrosities.

My point?
In the Life and Style pages of the Daily Mail last Monday I came across an article entitled ‘Forget Jimmy Choos – I’d rather wear Clarks!’
At this point in my life; older and wiser, I can safely say that I wholly agree.
These days I can walk past the window of Clarks, notice a beautiful pair of shoes, and happily walk in to try them on. I did just that a few weeks ago, and invested in this beautiful pair of metallic brogues; perfect for late summer, and autum with dresses, skirts and skinny jeans!

AW15 Metallic Brouges

As noted in the newspaper article, authored by Sarah Vine, Clarks have transformed their shoes to tick four crucial boxes; comfort, style, affordability and quality. There is a range of styles to suit the traditional and not-so-traditional, as well as half sizes for that perfect fit; catering to everyone’s needs.
Unfortunately, this brilliant brand revamp came too late for my school shoes days, and now even thick soled and clunky shoes are all the range for young teenagers; the Doc Marten’s look having grown in popularity the last few years (I must have been born before my time!).  Regardless of their notoriety to break in, I wish I suited Doc Marten’s boots.
The desire for well made and comfortable shoes is now ingrained into who I am, thankfully there are more choices available to us now. So thank you, mum, I am grateful despite the fight that my younger self put up.
Here’s hoping Clarks continues serving their homeland British market for another 190 years!

OOTD: Denim Dress

Miss Selfridge Sale denim dress, Miss Selfridge striped crop top and black tights.

I found this bargain of a denim dress a few days ago and bought it off the sale rack on a whim without trying it on. Luck paid off!

I’d been hunting for a great little denim dress to take me from summertime to Autumn/Winter ’15 for a little while, and this one is fantastic. While others were always too tight and/or exceeding short for my more modest dress sense, this one fits perfectly without being too tight or too loose and comes down to just above knee height. Perfect!
Paired with metallic brogues and a leather jacket for today, and a chunky knit cardigan and boots for tomorrow. Great changing seasons investment.

Photography Thursday – The Atlas of Beauty

These days, beauty has become a fickle concept of the right angled eye liner flicks, thigh gaps and well cut cheekbones.  But for those of us not blessed with Western society’s concept of beauty and a steady hand for that eyeliner? Never fear.

For today’s Photography Thursday I bring you the portrait talents of Romanian photographer Mihaela Noroc, and her ongoing project The Atlas of Beauty.

Noroc has visited over 60 countries, immersing herself and her camera in remote, rich and beautiful cultures.  Her project involves taking portrait photographs of the culture’s concept of beauty.  For the future, she hopes the project to become known worldwide and an inspiration to women to be themselves. If this blog post goes any way towards helping that be achieved, then I believe I have done my good deed for the day.

“In my opinion, beauty means to keep alive your origins and your culture.  To be natural, sincere, authentic, particular, not necessary fashion or skinny.” – retrieved from Noroc’s tumblr
